Frequently asked questions
Where do the exchange rates come from?
Rates load in your browser from a free public exchange-rate service (open.er-api.com). The page shows the date the service last updated them.
Is this the rate my bank or card will give me?
No. These are indicative mid-market rates. Banks, cash exchanges and card networks add a margin or fee, so the amount you receive is usually a little lower.
What if the rates do not load?
Check your connection and reload the page. If the rate service is down, the tool tells you instead of showing a guess.
How to use the currency converter
Pick the currency you have and the currency you need, type an amount, and read the converted figure. The rate is an indicative market rate, refreshed regularly, the kind you see quoted in the news. It is the fair middle rate between buying and selling, which is why it is useful for planning a budget or sanity-checking a price abroad.
What you actually pay differs a little. Banks and card networks add a small margin, typically a percent or two, and cash exchange counters add more, with airport counters usually the worst. When a shop, hotel or ATM abroad asks whether you want to be charged in your home currency, that is called dynamic currency conversion; it almost always costs more, so choose the local currency and let your own bank convert. Use this tool to know roughly what a fair rate is, then compare it with the rate your card or exchange office offers. For 30 major currencies the converter also shows the three-letter code, which is what you will see on receipts and bank statements.
