Getting there
Most visitors fly into Zvartnots International Airport near Yerevan, with some flights to Shirak Airport in Gyumri. Overland, travellers commonly cross from Georgia by road or train, and from Iran in the south.
Best time to visit: May–Jun and Sep–Oct – mild weather, green hills or autumn colours.
Tougher months: December–February if you dislike cold, with snow in the mountains; July–August can be very hot in Yerevan.

Things to do
- Watch Ararat at sunrise. Stand beside the monastery of Khor Virap as the snowy double peak of Mount Ararat glows pink across the border.
- Ride the Wings of Tatev. Glide over the Vorotan Gorge on one of the world's longest reversible aerial tramways to a ninth-century monastery.
- Climb the Yerevan Cascade. Walk up the giant limestone staircase lined with modern sculpture for sweeping views over the pink-stone capital.
- Taste wine in Areni. Sample bottles made from local grapes in the village where people pressed wine more than 6,000 years ago.
- Swim or sail at Lake Sevan. Cool off at one of the world's largest high-altitude freshwater lakes, watched over by the Sevanavank churches.
- Hear the echo at Geghard. Step into chapels carved straight into the cliff, where acoustics make chanting sound otherworldly.
- Browse the Vernissage market. Hunt for carpets, carved wood, Soviet badges and backgammon boards at Yerevan's weekend open-air market.
- Hike in Dilijan. Follow forest trails through the leafy hills nicknamed Armenia's Switzerland, with old monasteries hidden among the trees.
